A musical by Jonathon Larson

rent10.jpg

I first heard about RENT when I met Jules. I never really bothered to listen to the music until maybe December of my freshman year here, and the I was hopelessly addicted. I know the play backwards and forwards, and I finally went to see it in April.

It's an unbelievable musical with a great story, and it has some very amazing music in it. If you get a chance, see it or to listen to the sountrack.

Maureen and Joanne in "Take me or leave me"-
one of my favorite songs.

Maureen (the blond) is Mark's ex-girlfriend. Now she's a lesbian and she's dating Joanne who took over Mark's spot as Maureen's production manager. This song is the two of them fighting about their relationship.

Roger and Mimi again.

Roger and Mimi try to maintain a relationship, but neither Roger nor Mimi has mentioned that they have the AIDS virus, and each is worried about being a burden to the other because of the sickness.

Angel Dumott Schunard and Tom Collins

Angel is a drag queen who meets Collins, who was just mugged on the street, and they find out that they both have the AIDS virus. Collins is Mark and Roger's former roommate and he has just returned from working at MIT.

The cast in "Without you"

In this song, the couples (Maureen and Joanne, Angel and Collins, Mimi and Roger) lament their problems and their sicknesses. Angel becomes more and more sick as the AIDS virus takes it's effect. Mimi and Roger try to work out their differences, but each is afraid to admit the true extent of their feelings.

Roger and Mimi in "Light my candle"

Roger is Mark's roommate. He contracted AIDS from his previous girlfriend who committed suicide. Mimi is a drug user who meets Roger when she comes looking for a light for her candle. She too has the AIDS virus. She is also the ex-girlfriend of Mark and Roger's former roommate, Benny.

Mark Cohen

Mark is a film-maker who hasn't come up with an idea yet. He is always working on a new film to try and make it big. He is one of the few characters in the play who does not have AIDS, and he is forced to watch his friends suffer from their diseases.

Roger in "One song glory"

rent12.jpg

Roger is a musician looking for that one song that has always eluded him. In his depression about his former girlfriend, his sickness and his music, he hasn't left the house in months.

Maureen doing her performance of "Over the moon"

Maureen is a "performer" and in this song, she is holding a protest to save the building that Mark and Roger live in. Their ex-roommate Benny is trying to kick them out since they can't pay the rent. Maureen gives a wildly theatrical rendition of the situation and wins cheers and mooing from the crowd.

.
Mark and Roger are desperately trying to figure out how to pay the rent. Mark eventually makes it big with footage from Maureen's protest but he sells out to a sleazy tv program to get the money.

TO DAYS OF INSPIRATION,
PLAYING HOOKEY, MAKING SOMETHING
OUT OF NOTHING, THE NEED
TO EXPRESS-
TO COMMUNICATE,
TO GOING AGAINST THE GRAIN,
GOING INSANE,
GOING MAD

TO LOVING TENSION, NO PENSION,
TO MORE THAN ONE DIMENSION,
TO STARVING FOR ATTENTION,
HATING CONVENTION, HATING
PRETENSION,
NOT TO MENTION OF COURSE,
HATING DEAR OLD MOM AND DAD

TO RIDING YOUR BIKE,
MIDDAY PAST THE THREE
PIECE SUITS-
TO FRUITS- TO NO ABSOLUTES-
TO ABSOLUT- TO CHOICE-
TO THE VILLAGE VOICE-
TO ANY PASSING FAD

TO BEING AN US FOR ONCE
INSTEAD OF A THEM-

LA VIE BOHEME!
